Firms Rate an “F” for “Failing” to use Web Technologies

Accounting firms are failing to use Web technologies such as RSS feeds, blogs and podcasts to their advantage. That is the finding of a recent study by Muzeview, a research and consulting firm focused on innovation in the professional services industry.

The study, a survey of the websites of the top 50 accounting firm websites, found that:

·         Only three firms provided RSS feeds for any of their Web site content (only one outside the Big Four).

·         Only four firms had Pod casts (only one outside the Big Four).

·         No firm has ventured to start a blog (at least one firm partner writes a blog relating to professional issues, but the blog is maintained separately from the firm’s Web site).

·         Eleven firms offer some form of video content in the form of Web casts, Web seminars or video clips.

The report concludes that the reluctance of accounting firms to adopt web technologies could ultimately lead to lost opportunity, as interactions between businesses and their clients, prospective clients and potential employees increasingly occur online. These technologies are relatively simple and inexpensive to deploy, and have a much higher engagement potential than text
