How is this different than using a backup/restore?  Well for one you’d need to ensure that you have something that supports hardware independent restore process.  And this allows you to clean up the server in the process.  It’s very similar to Jeff Middleton’s Swing Migration process at http://www.sbsmigration.com the differences are that it takes two servers (not his two and a virtual/workstation/anything as the temp server) and rather than his process of being able to name the ending server the same as the beginning one, it uses a redirect process to get the workstations to not know the server moved.  The two are very similar approaches, the major difference is that Jeff’s method of “seizing” the roles leaves the original server intact as a fall back.  But … like I said.. they are very close.

  1. What if the old server is SP1 and the new hardware and server R2?
