From the I didn’t know that …

Application publishing. IT administrators can publish applications to the domain. Users who are joined to the domain can then search for and install the applications from a single location. This saves time remembering file server names and shares or requesting the administrators’ help.

So how do you do this?

So you launch the group policy managment console and go under User Configuration, Policies, Software settings.  On Software installation right mouse click and start the deployment wizard.

When you are asked to put in the location of the file for deployment, you need to remember that it needs to be a location that the workstations can access.

So make sure you put in \\unc path name of the server\location of the file

And choose to publish.

Then when you go to the workstation go to “get Program”

You’ll see the published app

So… there you go.  Normal Group policy can be used to push apps OR to publish them so they can be offered up in a more DIY app portal manner.

Do users who install apps this way need to have administrator permissions, or will permsions take care of themselves since this is in group policy?
