QUOTE: In the midst of the ongoing controversy about PRISM, Xkeyscore, and government surveillance, NSA director General Keith Alexander delivered the keynote speech at Black Hat 2013. The speech wasn’t without its hiccups, but it is a look at a completely different perspective on security. Earlier this week, we brought you our coverage of the event. But seeing it for yourself is even better. During the presentation, which runs just short of an hour, Alexander makes a big push for the necessity of the NSA’s operations in counter-terrorism efforts. He brings up plots which Alexander says were disrupted thanks to information obtained by the NSA.

Oversight was a point that he stressed, saying that the handful of analysts that can see intercepted data are completely accountable for their actions. “Virtually all countries have lawful intercept programs,” Alexander said, but pointed out that the courts, Congress, and the White House existed to prevent the abuse of data interception programs.  Putting a lighter spin on the issue of oversight, Alexander  said “we can’t intercept your calls to your mom,” in response to a question. “You guys probably can, though,”
