Troubleshooting OpenVPN For Windows 7/Vista 64bit Operating Systems

From time to time you come across client requests to install software that is not setup for 64 bit operating systems even though the software does support 64bit processing. A recent client request to install Open VPN illustrates this point. The following is how I resolved the error messages.

Troubleshooting OpenVPN For Windows 7/Vista 64bit Operating Systems.

When installing OpenVPN save the installer file to a location of your choosing.
Right click on the installer and select the “Run as Administrator” option.

You need to open the config file and change the pointers to reflect the 32 bit location of files and folders. Right click on the system tray icon for the OpenVPN GUI. Select Edit Config. Notepad will open with the config file.

Now find and replace ‘Program Files’ with ‘Program Files (x86)’. To do this in notepad

Press Ctrl+H to open the find and replace dialogue.

In Find type:   Program Files
In Replace type: Program Files (x86)

Click Replace All.

Restart OpenVPN GUI.

If problems persist check to ensure that the OpenVPN GUI is running as administrator. You can permanently make the OpenVPNGui run as administrator by:

Right click on the OpenVPN GUI shortcut
Select Properties
The OpenVPN GUI Properties Dialogue will open,
Select the compatibility tab.
Under Priviledge Level check ‘Run this program as an administrator’
Click Apply
Click OK
Restart OpenVPN GUI.
