SQL Server Workgroup Edition When to buy Processor vs. User CALs

It might seem like magic when trying to figure out how to license SQL Server. I put together the following chart which uses Canadian OEM pricing. This is for Workgroup Edition. It shows the methodology to find the break even point. You can use this methodology in other regions and with other versions of SQL Server.

The break even point is at 25 users for 1 processor and 50 users for 2 processors.

Let me know how this works out for you.

IAMCP Advocates for change – Silver Partners get 25 SBS User CALs

This morning I received word back from the Microsoft Server and Cloud group that they will be increasing the number of Client Access Licenses given to Silver Partners to 25.SBS25

Here is my initial case on behalf of partners:

~

Hello SBS team,

As an advocate for the partner community I would like to point out a silly mistake in the partner benefits and elaborate a case for change.

Keeping this short, it is better if partners install on SBS since it gets them up and running with a pile of MS technologies all at once in a best practices based configuration.

Partners get 25 CALS for all core products except for SBS which they get 10. I suggest you change this to 25.

You as a team should want partners installing SBS for their internal use. As for Microsoft, the easier it is to get partners using all of the technologies in SBS the better it is for talking about those technologies with clients.

~

A number of SBS MVPs supported the push notably Philip Elder and Andy Trish. Michael Leworthy from Microsoft was the internal advocate. In response to further details on the availability of the new CALs, Michael stated it should happen fairly quick. I want to thank Microsoft for reacting quickly to this need for choice in the partner community.

Government to overrule the CRTC UBB

Here are a couple of posts on the Usage Based Billing. First the Government has stated that it will over rule the CRTC decision which would have seen competition reduced by competitive internet service providers.

Federal Liberals respond to concerns over UBB decision by CRTC

On Saturday I sent a note to the liberal opposition party on behalf of myself and as the President of the IAMCP in Canada. Please read the official stance that communication lead to.

The importance of a strong voice that responds quickly and through the right channels is important to the health of our community and economy.
