To the SBS Community

SBS SP1 is a complex SP. It should not be installed the moment it is Downloaded! Installation requires planning and your MVPs, especially the M&Ms Mariette and Marina, have put together a document with screen shots which covers the installation in depth! See

http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=236 for this valuable resource BEFORE you install and save yourself a lot of pain!

MVP’s (All who contibuted),

I’ve read through the documentation and have a couple of questions.

1. Why would SBS’rs need to install the Windows 2003 SP1 (as we’ve been told not to do this) if we’ve been waiting for the SBS’ized SP1? The SBS site has KB885918 as the SP to download. The Doc says to download KB889101?

2. I have Exchange SP1 installed already. Is it neccessary to install again? Is this an updated SP for Exchange?

3. Is it neccessary to install KB891193 (Actually looks like the KB is 884032)? My PC’s already have XP SP@ installed and XP SP1 has been removed from my servers ClientApps folder.

Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks,

Bill V

Hi Bill,

Read, Bill, read. Read all the release notes that MS provided.

885918 is the actual SBS SP1, which needs to be installed as last. You first do W2k3 SP1 (889101), if you have Exchange SP1 installed, you can skip that. If you have XP SP2 installed in the clientapps with the additional 2 patches, you can skip that.

Read, and read again.

I appreciate all the help with this, Marina and everyone else,

What’s not clear to me is this: All my workstations already have XP/SP2 installed, and any new ones I add will also have XP/SP2 already installed, so I’m never going to need to push XP/SP2 to any workstations. Under those circumstances, can I skip the XP/SP2-and-additional-2-patches step?

Hi Gary,

I wouldn’t skip it. If you have already installed XP SP2 in the clientapps and those 2 patches, you should be good to go. You don’t need to download the 891193 if you have already done that. Alternatively, if you have the XP SP2 network download, follow the steps in 884032 to install it in the clientapps.

I’m not explaining this clearly. Sorry.

I have not already installed XP/SP2 in Clientapps. I’m never going to need XP/SP2 in Clientapps because I’m never going to push/install XP/SP2 from the SBS server. Do I still need to follow this step anyway?

Hi Gary,

Well, why don’t you try it and tell us? ;-) My bet however is, that you still need to do it.

Hi Gary -

You will need to apply the XP SP2 update.  On one of my production servers that I sacrificed for testing SP1, I thought I had already applied the XP SP2 update, when I hadn’t.  The SBS SP1 installation stopped and indicated that the XP SP2 update was not found, and that it was required for the SBS SP1 installation . . .
