I have given users contributer access to sharepoint.  In the document library users would like to add new documents but without the threat of having someone else using the library delete there submission.  Is there a way to restrict other users from deleting your documents such as setting permissions on that document?

I have tried view/editing the properties but no where does it say anything about permissions.

Thanks.

Item level security doesn’t exist in SharePoint, however there are a variety of recycle bins available (one on gotdotnet.com) that will allow you to perserve copies should a document get deleted. If you wanted to do doc level securty in a doc lib you could use Rights Management Services as well, its pretty easy to setup.

Rights Management Services is an additional Microsoft product that has nothing to do with SharePoint but which works well with it.

It requires an additional server.

Cindy,

Additional Site Groups can be created.  The example below gives instructions for creating a site group that contains the same user rights as the Contributor group except that the “delete items” right is excluded.

Create the “Contributor without Delete” site group

1. Click Site Settings

2. Click Go to Site Administration

3. Click Manage site groups

4. Click the Contributor group.

5. Click Edit Site Group Permissions.

6. Click Copy Site Group.

7. Enter the following:

Site Group Name:  Contributor without Delete

Description: Same rights as Contributor group except the “Delete Items” right has been excluded.

8. Uncheck the “Delete Items” right

9. Click Create Site Group.
