I’m playing around with sharepoint 2007 and I’m simply trying to upload a document to the mysite portion… the documents directory (either personal or shared) and I get the error:

The file name is invalid or the file is empty. A file name cannot contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? ” < > | # { } % ~ &

I’m going to the documents directory and clicking the Upload Document option.  There it gives you the option to Browse for a document to upload… and I browse to a document that is on my computer.. and I get this error?

Is there a specific directory that I need to put documents?  Then why would they put the BROWSE option there and give you a normal explorer dialog?

Remove any illegal characters from the filename.

I guess I should have mentioned it (hence the point of the post) there where no illegal characters in the name.  It has a browse button so I navigated to a document (let’s just say C:\test\test.doc) and this would not work (I received the message noted above).  If the illegal characters are the ‘\’ then I don’t understand the point of the browse button; or is there a specific place where the documents have to reside?

thank you for responding.

Ok, so I think I figured it out.  I was running some test cases and I was using blank .txt documents (0KB documents – i was simply right clicking and creating a blank new text document).  This was the issue – they did not have any text.  So when I opened one and I added some actual text inside the documents they went through fine.

So it wasn’t that there were illegal characters, it’s just that they were 0kb documents and the system didn’t like this.
