Name des Updates und Nummer:

  • Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)
    version 9.00.3068.00 released on 7/8/2008

Applies to:

  • SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 with Reporting Services installed

Symptoms & Result:

  • After installation the SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services service might not start. Therefore the Reporting Services cannot be used anymore.

  • The Update is distributed via Windows Update.

  • Uninstall the update (requires a restart).

My recommendation:
(for your internal SQL server you use for TFS)

  • Do not install the update and wait for the next service pack release.

Did anyone give this guy the log files he’s asking for?

He’s closed the bug as non repro-able.

Saying wait until the next service pack is not acceptable.

You find a workaround how to fix it on the connect site if you prefer.

I do not advise any hotfixes on production machines other than offical service packs.

This isn’t a hotfix, this is a security patch.

As MVPs can we better get to the bottom of this.

Each person needs to evaluate the risk factors of this security patch, but calling it merely a hotfix is not what this is.

Although I went to the bottom of it, that actually doesn’t matter to me. This update won’t get installed since it creates a new problem.

With calling it a “hotfix” I wanted to refer to the level of testing which is not adequate for environments I support.

Susan, I added the remark that my recommendation is “for your internal SQL server you use for TFS” and does not generally apply other situations.
