Why Service Pack 2?

So one of the reasons for wanting/installing SP2 is this one:

891957 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891957/) Update is available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service issues in Windows Server 2003

There are many VSS hotfixes that prior to this you had to call in and get.  So the good news is that they are in Service pack 2.  You can take a look at the list here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914962

So … let’s talk about SP2…

If you have a SP1 standard box and you already applied it and everything is running okay… keep it on.  It causes more issues (MMC 3.0 and schedule tasks) to remove it.

If you have a standard box and you haven’t already applied it… it’s okay to wait.

If you have a R2 SBS it’s an easier install/uninstall as the MMC 3.0 doesn’t get messed up.

Premium boxes with ISA make sure you have the latest nic drivers before installing SP2 as well.

So bottom line?  If it’s on.. leave it on.. if it’s not installed.. they maybe it’s best to wait a bit.
