Issue:

We are deploying a new merge replication solution in our testing environment we have re setup a few times; we keep getting this error:

The merge process was unable to create a new generation at the ‘Publisher’. Troubleshoot by restarting the synchronization with verbose history logging

and specify an output file to which to write. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147200994).

Analysis:

This issue could occur because of generation leveling of the merge agent

Resolution:

Run the following script to change the merge agent generation leveling

====

Exec sp_changemergepublication @publication=<publication_name >, @property=
‘generation_leveling_threshold’, @value= ‘0’
go
sp_configure ‘allow updates’, 1
go
reconfigure with override
go
use <Published_db>
go
update sysmergepublications set generation_leveling_threshold=0 where
name=<publication_name >
go
sp_configure ‘allow updates’, 0
go
reconfigure with override
go
