I know Norton is evil

I know Norton is evil.  But earlier tonight I was helping a friend try to fix an issue where Norton was installed, running, yet the security center said it was turned off.

Windows 7 Action Center – Norton Community:

Sometimes, unregistering and re-registering WMIUTILS.DLL file will fix this issue.
1. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
regsvr32 /u WMIUTILS.DLL
3. Click OK.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Click the Start button, and then click All Programs > Accessories > Run.
6. In the Run dialog box, type the following text:
regsvr32 WMIUTILS.DLL
7. Click OK.
8. Restart the computer.

Okay for the record this didn’t work.  I’ll need to uninstall it and reinstall it… or rather uninstall it and try to convince them to install something else.

(yes friends should not let friends have Norton as a a/v I know…)

    Hi Susan,

long time reader, first time sender. Hi from Mission Beach in sunny Far North Queensland, Australia. Thanks for being consistently smart and interesting!
I have had a long love/hate with Norton over the years but lately have started to like them again. Can you please explain some of your thinking behind Norton evilness, and some options for a better AV ( I know, it is a bit like asking what sort of brick is nicer to hit yourself in the head with)
    cheers,

    Susan,

I see this with a number of AV products and the windows notification system, which is why I turn the AV notifications off. At some point an update will cause Windows Security Center to report wrong.

Remember it’s yellow box versus the corporate version. The yellow box (consumer) of Norton is annoying and heavy handed. It wouldn’t let me disable the service so the only way to fix it will be to uninstall it and reinstall.
