Q: What is dCut?
A: dCut is a program written for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE). dCut was written to make it easier to compress and cut the DVR-MS files which are created by MCE.
Q: What makes dCut special?
A: dCut is unique in a few ways. First, dCut combines the tasks of cutting out only the segments you want from dvr-ms files, and compressing dvr-ms files into a smaller format (Windows Media 9.) Second, dCut allows you to do all of this from your couch, utilizing the a 10′ UI which integrated directly into MCE. dCut works via a hosted HTML App, and uses the MCE remote control.
Q: How does it work?
A: When you load dCut, it provides you with a list of available dvr-ms files or wmv files. Using your MCE remote control, you choose from this list the file you want to work with. After you select the file, dCut will play it for you and allow you to denote the start and stops of segments you want to keep. After you have choosen all the segments you want, you then tell dCut to compress the file.

dCut ‘cut’ my 34 min programme down to the 28min I really wanted, but when I played it, it was upside down and mirror image.
Well, maybe I am just unlucky but I just installed dCut hoping to convert some of my recorded stuff but can’t even find it! The folder dCut with the service and the Configuration Manager are there, but nothing in Media Centre and this might be a problem because I have a Dutch Windows MCE… I wanted a regular English version but our dear HP only delivers Dutch in Holland. And what if you don;t speak Dutch, I asked but of course got no answer either from HP or the reseller.
And now this! Can anybody tell me how to get it to appear? and where it appears? In MC I expect you say there will be an extra item called More Programs, apart from Programs in which I have Itunes and WinDVD, for instance.

For non english windows mce, look in "Documents and Settings\All Users". You will find a "Start menu" folder. Inside you will find several folders and a file that you can move to your real start menu (that will depend on your language) in Accessories > Media Center > Media Center programs (all these names in your language)…

Hello, if i use dCut to cut and compress a mvr-ms then the dCut-Service hang at 60 percent of cutting. I haven’t some idea why the service produce an error. But maybe is the reson for this problem that the file is over 4 GB. But I don’t know.
Have someone a idea or the email adress from the developer the solve this problem?

I’ve had some problems too and these are my solutions. I’ve noticed that if I rename the video file before I cut/compress, dCut will hang. I remedy this by not renaming until I am done compressing and cutting.
I’ve also noticed that dCut will sometimes stop compresing/editing. When I restart dCut, it resumes with the file and tries again. By deleting the temp files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV\dcut (for my setup, yours may be different) and restarting dCut that this converts the file normally with no problems.
In rare cases, I have to delete the temp dCut files, re-edit my orginal dvr-ms and re-compress. The only times I’ve had to do this is when I fast-forward past the end of the video (eg- I am at 59:45 and hit forward 30 sec, #3 on the remote, but the show is only 60:00 long)
Interesting info guys. I appreciate it as I am trying to find the best way to convert these dvr-ms files like everyone else. It’s nice to find people talking about this.

ich hab mir dCut heruntergeladen und installiert. Im startmenü steht jetzt bloss: Dcut servises und dCut configuration assistant oder so etwas. Jetzt bin ich ins dcut verzeichnis und dort habe ich menupage gefunden. ein html dokument. ich habe es geöffnet und habe mit dem internetexplorer den film ausgewählt und auch die aktion die ich ausführen will! jetzt komme ich auf eine seite, auf der es oben please wait steht und links etwas von start secment und so weiter. wenn ich jetzt dort drauf klicke kommt: "die seite konnte nicht gefunden werden"
und beim media center unter mehr programme finde ich dcut auch nicht!!
was soll ich tun?
wie kann ich jetzt filme schneiden?
bitte helft mir!

…the problem can be solved by opening the file DCutWorker.pdb in a text-editor and change the links to the non-existend folders to the folder in which dcut is installed to; is c:\program files|dcut.

Does DCut support outputing directly to a network drive? I like to archive stuff off to my NAS where it is accessed by a couple of other MCE PC’s. I use tools like Power Compress and DVR Edit but trimming, converting & then moving stuff takes an age so I always seem to be on the verge of running out of space on my main recorder.
Hi even with editing the .pdb files I wasn’t able to get DCut compressing my recordings. Now I get an exception every time I start a job.

Hey, is there anyone still here? If so I’m having trouble with my dcut. I put more than one file in que to be edited. It did the first two just fine but now it keeps getting hung. I don’t even want it to compress the one it’s on now but I don’t know how to tell it not to compress this one. Nor do I know how to delete the others on the list. I deleted and reinstalled the programs hoping to start over but instead it still has this list somewhere? How do I solve this? where is this list? (by the way when my dcut hangs up it doesn’t give me any message. it just stops working)
I d-loaded dcut and it worked fine a few times. I tried to compress a movie and now it comes out with a green tint and a dark green bar at the bottom. Anyone have any ideas? Do I just need some type of codec? What boggles my mind is that it worked fine like 4 times…. Any help would be appreciated…
For anyone getting the “System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040217): Exception de HRESULT : 0x80040217” Error of which I was suffering – I found in another forum that this is due to WMV somehow needing to connect to the internet (I’m guessing either everytime you do an encoding or maybe just once to obtain some kind of licence)
So like you guys, when Windows Firewall prompted me to allow access to the net for dCut I said “NO” which casued this problem.
The way to fix it is to uninstall dCut and clear out all the crap from it’s program files directory. Then make sure that you go into windows firewall settings and delete the entry for dCut.
Reinstall the program and say “YES” this time when it asks to access the internet – Sorted.
(there are probably a few short cuts to this but I tried things like just changing the windows F/W settings and this didnt help so maybe it is just an install-time thing that requires Internet access)
