Short Bits: Wednesday, September 5, 2007

Today was a big day, lots of stuff going on and lots of
stuff I didn’t get to talk about.

First off, as you should of seen in Microsoft’s
CEDIA press release
, WebGuide is now a free application for all to
enjoy.  In addition, Doug
Berrett is now a Microsoft employee
working with the Media Center team.  Congrats to Doug and everyone go grab WebGuide for
free
! (Via Missing
Remote
)

CE Pro was covering CEDIA as usual, and has several other
great stories.  ThinkControl
has introduced a SideShow Remote platform using Z-Wave
for its wireless
communication.  This should allow others
to create affordable SideShow Remotes that will also be able to function with
Z-Wave enabled lights and appliances.  PiTech
and CWTek are currently developing SideShow devices using this and should be available
late 2007 to early 2008.

More CE Pro news, Exceptional Innovation hit hard at CEDIA
as expected.  They are of course part of
that four
CableCARD tuner announcement
and have
a host of new and updated products to go along with that
.

In addition to that, Exceptional Innovation has another new
offering, this time for hotel rooms.  Dubbed
LifeAmenities
it will give guests at hotels the ability to schedule spa
appointments, make restaurant reservations, schedule housekeeping services,
control their in-room lighting and temperature, etc all from Media Center.  What better way to introduce people to Media
Center then getting to see the best at their hotel stay?  Great idea!
This really shows how flexible Media Center can be, and I hope others
follow with moves like this.
