Hacker hits temporary license plate database

A hacker tapped into as many as 200,000 temporary license plate records in an Illinois secretary of state computer database for hours over the weekend, leaving them potentially vulnerable to copying or even tampering.

The FBI and secretary of state police were investigating, secretary of state spokesman Dave Druker said Wednesday. He emphasized that only the “temporary registration permit” database was compromised, not the main drivers’ license system that includes Social Security numbers and driving records. There was no evidence that any records were changed or erased.
