Apple – Worldwide Developers Conference 2018

Apple’s WWDC will share some of key product & service initiatives for 2018 as shared in links below:

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starts today at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, with the traditional keynote kicking things off at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. We’re expecting to see a number of announcements, although it appears Apple will primarily be discussing software this year. Apple is providing a live video stream on its website and via Apple TV.  iOS 12 and macOS 10.14 are expected to be the main focus as usual, with Apple itself leaking macOS details heading into the weekend.

Microsoft – GitHub web repository service purchased for 7.5 billion

GitHub is the world’s largest web-based project hosting, service used by 28 million developers and for 57 million project repositories. GitHub has been purchased by Microsoft for $7.5 billion.

The name GitHub may not mean much to you, but for developers it’s a big deal. GitHub is the largest host of source code in the world; it hosts over 57 million project repositories and over 28 million users rely on it to keep that code safe and accessible. Now Microsoft owns it.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed the acqusition, stating “Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation… We recognize the community responsibility we take on with this agreement and will do our best work to empower every developer to build, innovate and solve the world’s most pressing challenges.”

Talk of an acquisition concerned developers yesterday, who were understandably worried about what Microsoft would do to the service. Microsoft is focused on selling proprietary software, whereas GitHub has always been a friend of open source, offering free accounts to such projects. Activity overnight reflected this concern is real, with GitHub alternative GitLab enjoying a huge surge is project migrations from GitHub.

Developers can relax a little, though. Microsoft explained that, “GitHub will retain its developer-first ethos and will operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries.” In other words, GitHub will continue to operate as normal, without any big changes happening, at least for now.

Leadership – Techniques to train high potential employees in 2018

The John Maxwell leadership training center shares valuable techniques for training the most talented & high potential employees in company, as follows:

They’re the secret sauce for a successful organization—high potential employees. They drive your company’s success and inspire other team members to elevate performance. But if you don’t train them differently, you’ll lose them.

High potential employees aren’t difficult to spot. They’re the ones who get things done with excellence—and ask for more. They’re always taking the initiative to improve their skills, not waiting for you to provide training for them. They seek out feedback in their drive to improve performance and polish their skills to perfection. They typically make up about 3-5% of the company’s talent.

Below are ideas related to training your high potential employees:

1. Rather than forcing people to be something they are not, identify the high potential employees and develop them into who they can be. Good companies push people out of their comfort zones, but never their strength zones.

2. High potential employees are hardwired to soar to new heights and see things from a different perspective.

3. If your high potential employees or your core employees aren’t getting what they need to use their strengths effectively, maybe it’s time to examine your company’s approach to training to see if your perspective is the problem.

4. When high potential employees are asked what organizations could do to increase their engagement and commitment, the number one answer is to provide a clear career path and support. In short, they want clarity on direction and help to soar to new heights.
