Its been a while since nVidia graphics updates have worked for me. I have been using 191.07 because anything else made my Pageflakes home page go into spasm if the mouse was run across it. Some good news.. driver version 197.13 works great.. get it here.. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us The nVidia Control Panel applet has a bit more to play with, but I always leave the settings alone. The default works well enough for my purposes
Microsoft have released a version of XP Mode which does not require Hardware Virtualization. The link below will take you to a Microsoft website where you can download the three parts necessary. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx I had not been able to try out XP mode because of the HV issue. My BIOS and processor are ‘old hat’ and wouldn’t allow for it, although some quad core ‘new hats’ don’t have HV either. OK, so now I have the three parts saved on my hard drive, but I have not installed them. Why? Because I have been reading up on XP mode is … Continue reading XP Mode without Hardware Virtualization
I run Speedfan on this computer because it sits in an open ended cubby hole in my desk. My interest in fans is not #1 on my list of hobbies, but it is nice to see when the box needs a dusting out. Just recently, I noticed that the GPU temperature was rising too quickly, and an inspection showed that the fan was turning, but dust was preventing a decent airflow. Unfortunately, the build up of dust was not just around the heatsink fins. The GPU fan was not exactly spinning freely, but it was still spinning. That was last … Continue reading VGA Temperatures..
I doubt very much that they do.. This is the contents of an email sent out to an AOL user. AOL customers are probably some of the most vulnerable users on the planet. They trust AOL to hand hold them through their computing experience, to be safe. Whoever is responsible for this email has no conscience. Put PC Speed Scan Pro on your computer at your own risk. Once installed, the performance increase promised will never materialize. When you run the free scan, it will list a lot of things wrong, but most if not all will probably be bogus. … Continue reading Microsoft recommends this one download?..
Version 196.75 drivers can possibly kill your graphics card.. A statement from nVidia.. “We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our Web site in the meantime.” The problem seems to be with the fan controller which slows the fan down to the point where the video card overheats and can die. Needless to say that nVidia are not offering … Continue reading nVidia Graphics drivers – Important
Windows 7 RC looked good until.. .. the realization that installation of 7 RC overwrites manufacturer MBR’s making it more difficult to access recovery partitions than just pressing CTRL + F11 or whatever key combo does the trick. One has to use any Vista DVD and intercept the installation in order to get to a command prompt and finally the recovery partition. Fortunately, Vista images are laid very quickly indeed, and that is a good thing because the time taken to install updates thereafter takes forever. All of this is way beyond the average end user who was not supplied … Continue reading 7 RC back to Vista
