MyCleanPC revisited.. they cancelled my call.. put the receiver down on me.. LOL

The guy on the TV advert states that a virus can PERMANENTLY damage a computer.

Really??

So I just called the MyCleanPC telephone number. It is on their website.. 1 800 275 4694

I stated to the operative that before I let them do anything or me purchase anything, I wanted to ask a question. It was simple enough.

What part of my computer could be permanently damaged by a virus?

The operative wasn’t sure and offered to pass me on to a technical operative. I waited, and sure enough another operative spoke up. I asked the same question.

What part of my computer could be permanently damaged by a virus?

The second operative didn’t seem too sure either and told me that it was a good question, but would I like my computer scanned while she got a hold of a technical person to answer my question.

Again, I stated to the operative that before I let them do anything or me purchase anything, I wanted to ask a question. It was simple enough.

Not surprisingly, the operative CANCELLED my call. Maybe they thought that I was recording the conversation.

If anybody knows of just one instance where a virus has left any part of a computer permanently damaged, please reply to this blog entry.

In all of my years around computers I have yet to see ONE instance of permanent damage as per MyCleanPC’s claim.

For sure a virus may scramble a hard drive, corrupt the formatting, but permanent damage? NEVER.

The guy who runs this website.. http://spywarepreventionguy.com/ has a small piece on the front page where he calls CyberDefender a borderline scam. See it for yourselves.

Well, making false claims takes it above a BORDER-LINE scam in my opinion. Suggesting that malware etc can PERMANENTLY damage your computer is scare tactics and untrue.

The web site has three instances of the word ‘FREE’ on it, but look at the blurb at the base of the page. The FREE part is the DIAGNOSIS and IDENTIFICATION. There is NO mention of FREE REMOVAL.

You will have to purchase the license for the TRIAL versions if you want to REMOVE anything.

CyberDefender Corp trade as:

My advice to anybody is not to go near any of these services.

  1. There are actually a few instances I can think of that could possibly damage a PC.

One possible way is for the bug to set your video card to a setting your monitor can’t handle and if left that way for a while causing possible to damage a monitor. Now this only would work on older CRT monitors and plasma displays, not on LCD displays.

Another possible way could be for the bug to write to the flash bios chip on the motherboard until it goes belly up(Flash memory has a limited number of write cycles). This would take a lot of time and so you would have to let the bug run on and on which few people would do.

Then there is the possibility of a bug that could change the bios settings, shut off thermal shutdown options and then up the voltage on the CPU, RAM, or Video card to a point ware one of these mite overheat and fail.

Then there is a bug that could shut off thermal shutdown and change the clocking on the CPU or on the video card, overclocking these parts till they overheat and fail.

Then there is the possibility of a bug that thrashes the hard drive driving the heads back and forth full stroke continuously and possibly damaging a hard drive, this would have to run for a very long time.

Now these are just some ideas and most of them are really pushing the edge of just barely possible.
