Ihr habt sicher alle mittlerweile mitbekommen, dass es die gute alte Microsoft TechEd Konferenz nicht mehr gibt. Das neue Format heißt nun Microsoft Ignite.

Dieses Jahr findet die große Ignite Konferenz vom 4.-8. Mai in Chicago, IL, USA statt. Die Keynote wird u.a. durch Satya Nadella, CEO Microsoft gehalten. Eintrittspreis liegt derzeit bei $2,220 zuzüglich Hotel, Flug etc.

Am 03. May gibt es den traditionellen Pre-Conference Day. An diesem Tag kann man zwischen 17 Vorträgen wählen, die den gesamten Tag (09:00-17:00) ausfüllen. Allerdings kostet der Pre-Conf Tag zusätzlich $500.

Morgen geht es für mich nach Barcelona zur TechEd Europe 2014. Hoffe ich zumindest. Noch kämpfe ich mit dem Ende einer Erkältung, aber ich hoffe, es wird besser.

Während der TechEd werde ich mich bemühen, wichtige und interessante Infos rund um das Event und Inhalte zu twittern.

Noch ein paar organisatorische Tipps:

So sieht der diesjährige Rucksack aus, den ihr bei der Registrierung bekommt:

Flughafentransfer:

Am Montag, Dienstag gibt es einen Busshuttle vom Flughafen BCN zum Konferenzgelände Fira und Freitag von dort zum Flughafen. In der Gepäckausgabehalle solltet ihr nach einem TechEd Welcome Desk ausschau halten – dort erhaltet ihr weitere Infos zu den genauen Fahrtzeiten. Der Shuttle steht Montag 08:00-19:00 Uhr, Dienstag 07:00-09:00 Uhr und Freitag 13:00-17:00 Uhr zur Verfügung.

Am Dienstag und Freitag könnt ihr auch prinzipiell euer Gepäck an der Konferenzgarderobe abgeben.

Registrierung:

Die Registrierung ist wie folgt geöffnet:

• Sonntag 14:00-20:00
• Montag 07:00-21;00
• Dienstag 07:00-20:30

Dort bekommt ihr euren Badge, den Rucksack sowie weitere Unterlagen. Bitte achtet nochmals darauf, dass ihr nicht in der Stadt mit dem Badge herumlauft. In früheren Jahren gab es einige Übergriffe auf Teilnehmer. Auch in Barcelona gibt es Taschendiebe.

Veranstaltungsort:

Es gibt zwei Veranstaltungsorte in Barcelona, die Fira heißen. Die TechEd ist im Südwesten der Stadt, Richtung Flughafen.

Fira de Barcelona (North Entrance), Carrer del Foc, 08034 L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona

Die nächstgelegene U-Bahn-/Zugstation ist “Europa | Fira” und ca. 15 Fußminuten vom Nordeingang entfernt. Es gibt auch Shuttlebusse, die etwa alle 15 Minuten fahren.

Heute in zwei Wochen beginnt die diesjährige Microsoft TechEd Konferenz in Barcelona.

Für mich ist die TechEd die wichtigste offizielle Konferenz im Jahr rund um Microsoft-Themen. Seit 2002 war ich jährlich mindestens auf einer TechEd (Europe oder North America) bzw. dem IT Forum. Die zweitwichtigste Konferenz ist der jährliche MVP Global Summit in Redmond, an dem nur MVPs teilnehmen können.

So werde ich auch dieses Jahr wieder auf der TechEd dabei sein – dank der Unterstützung durch das Roundtable Projekt.

Natürlich muss auch ich mich wie jeder andere Teilnehmer auf die Konferenz vorbereiten, denn schließlich möchte ich ja “maximieren”, sprich so viel wie möglich von den Vorträgen mitbekommen – deswegen bin ich ja schließlich auf so einer Konferenz. Ich denke, euch geht es nicht anders. Doch wie sieht die richtige Vorbereitung aus?

Einen Überblick über die Agenda findet ihr hier: Agenda Da ist der Rahmen dargestellt mit den wichtigsten zeitlichen Aspekten.

Sonntag wird für viele von Euch Anreisetag sein. Wenn möglich, nutzt die Gelegenheit für einen Sehenswürdigkeitenbummel in Barcelona. Ich persönlich mag die Stadt ja nicht, dennoch gibt es einiges zu sehen. Zu meinen Favoriten gehören: Sagrada Familia, La Barcelonetta, La Rambla oder die Hafenseilbahn von Barcelona. Kleiner Tipp von mir: Passt besonders gut auf Eure Wertsachen/Geldbörsen auf. Und lauft bitte nicht außerhalb des Konferenzzentrums mit dem Konferenzbadge herum. Macht es einfach nicht.

Wenn ihr wollt, könnt ihr euch Sonntag oder Montag bereits eure Konferenzunterlagen abholen. Dienstagfrüh wird wie immer recht voll sein, Montag ist da deutlich entspannter, sofern ihr gegen Nachmittag da seid.

Montag ist Pre-Conference Tag. Da könnt ihr für zusätzliche 400€ an einem von 11 Ganztagsvorträgen mit viel Tiefgang teilnehmen. Ich schaffe es zeitlich nicht, ansonsten hätte ich PRC09 | Microsoft Office 365 Deployment Workshop von Alistair Speirs und Jeff Medford gebucht.

Dienstag ist dann der erste “richtige” Konferenztag. Um 08:30 Uhr startet die Keynote mit Jason Zander and Joe Belfiore. Ein Highlight, keine Frage. Seid rechtzeitig da, um einen guten Platz zu sichern. 08:30 da sein ist zu spät :-P Danach gibt es sechs Foundational Sessions und nach dem Mittagessen gehen die “richtigen” Vorträge los.

Apropos Verpflegung: Für euer leibliches Wohl ist gesorgt. Es gibt den ganzen Tag Getränke (Wasser, Softdrinks, Kaffee, Tee etc), Snacks und Obst sowie Aktionen. Frühstück sollte es auch geben (wobei es ggfs. im Hotel ruhiger zu geht). Mittagessen ist immer interessant, weil in so kurzer Zeit so viele Menschen abge”speist” werden ;) Aber ich bin noch immer satt geworden und kann mich grundsätzlich nicht über das Essen beklagen. Ja, es gab Sparjahre, aber das Feedback damals kam gut oben an.

Dienstagabend ist dann die “TechExpo Welcome Reception”. Da habt ihr die Möglichkeit, die Ausstellung zu besuchen und bei den verschiedenen Herstellern/Anbietern vorbei zu schauen. Natürlich ist die Expo auch tagsüber auf, schaut auf euren Terminplaner. Während der Welcome Reception gibt es traditionell auch Snacks und Getränke.

Mittwoch, Donnerstag und Freitag sind dann den ganzen Tag über Vorträge, Ausstellung, HandsOn-Labs etc.

Donnerstagabend gibt es von 18:30-20:00 eine “Ask The Expert”-Runde, in der ihr Eure Fragen zu bestimmten Themen loswerden könnt. Da werde auch ich dabei sein.

Freitagabend werden wohl viele abreisen, plant das ein, wenn ihr Gepäck an der Garderobe abgeben wollt (was kostenfrei möglich ist). Auch könnte es am Flughafen BCN etwas voller werden, plant ausreichend Zeit ein.

Ich sprach ja schon von den Vorträgen. Das Wichtigste auf dieser Konferenz ;) Da stehe auch ich jedes Jahr vor der Qual der Wahl. Schließlich gibt es um die 500 verschiedene Vorträge (habe sie nie genau gezählt), aber nur 17 Zeitslots. Also könnt ihr gar nicht erst alle Vorträge anhören. Ihr müsst euch entscheiden. Dabei hilft der Session Builder, den ihr dringend nutzen solltet, um euren “Stundenplan” zusammen zu stellen. Der ist nur für euch als Hilfe gedacht, ihr habt durch das Auswählen eines Vortrages kein “Sitzplatzrecht”. Seid also rechtzeitig im Saal, beliebte Sessions sind oft vor Beginn überfüllt und daher geschlossen. Den Session Builder findet ihr hier. Wie er zu bedienen ist, ist eigentlich intuitiv:

Ihr wählt die Session aus, die euch interessiert. Ich gehe meistens so vor:

1. Völlig losgelöst von Zeit und Raum stöbere ich im Gesamtangebot der Vorträge und markiere mir alle, die mich interessieren
2. Dabei achte ich auch auf die Namen der Referenten. Ich suche auch gezielt nach Vorträgen mir gut bekannter Referenten.
3. Danach schaue ich mir die ausgewählten Vorträge in Bezug auf die Zeit an. Meist gibt es da deutliche Überschneidungen, manchmal habe ich 4-5 Vorträge zur selben Zeit. Das geht natürlich nicht ;)
4. Also schaue ich, ob einer der Vorträge zu einem anderen Zeitpunkt wiederholt wird oder ob es einen ähnlichen Vortrag zu einem anderen Zeitpunkt gibt
5. Wenn ja: sehr gut, schieben. Wenn nein: auch ok. Die Vorträge bleiben dann im Kalender als Mehrfachbelegung und ich schiebe meine Entscheidung auf den jeweiligen Vortragstag. Vielleicht habe ich Inhalte schon woanders unvermutet gehört, der Vortrag wurde verschoben oder ich stelle zu Beginn eines der Vorträge fest, dass mir die detaillierte Agenda nicht passt, dann wechsle ich.
6. Wenn alle Stricke reißen, vermerke ich mir das und versuche, die Aufzeichnung des Vortrages im Nachgang anzusehen

Ihr könnt anschließend den Session Builder mit Outlook synchronisieren, so dass alle wichtigen Informationen im Kalender stehen. Den nutze ich dann während des Vortrags oft als Notizbuch und mache kurze Notizen. Gut, ich könnte auch OneNote nehmen, so viele Notizen sind es in der Regel aber nicht. Die Vortragsfolien gibt es anschließend oder oft auch schon parallel sowieso.

Es gibt mehrere verschiedene Vortragsformate. Eine englische Erklärung findet ihr hier.

Apropos Englisch: Es dürfte euch aufgefallen sein, dass alle Vorträge und die ganze Konferenz in englischer Sprache gehalten sind. Ihr solltet daher einigermaßen technisches English verstehen können.

Wenn ihr nun euren Vortragsplan fertig habt, schaut mal drüber, ob er wiederum nicht zu voll ist. Vier Tage Vorträge sind anstrengend. Versucht etwas Luft zu lassen um ggfs. einen der Ausstellungsstände zu besuchen. Oder mal mit anderen Teilnehmern zu reden. Networking ist ein wesentlicher Teil der TechEd. Nutzt ihn.

Ergänzend dazu möchte ich noch auf zwei weitere Optionen verweisen:

Zertifizierung. Ihr könnt während den Konferenztagen vergünstigt MCP-Prüfungen ablegen. Mehr Informationen dazu gibt es hier.

Instructor-Led Labs und Hands-on-Labs. Hier könnt ihr selbst Hand anlegen und bestimmte Demoszenarien durchspielen. Betreuung von Experten inklusive. Ihr findet die Sessions dazu im Session Builder unter dem Session Type Instructor-Led Labs bzw. Hands-on Lab.  Sehr spannend, da ihr dabei wirklich an einem System sitzt und Konfigurieren könnt.

Auch während der TechEd werde ich Euch via Twitter auf dem Laufenden halten, über Neuigkeiten aus den Vorträgen und rund um die Veranstaltung selber twittern.

Nächste Woche bin ich Montag und Dienstag in Barcelona. Barcelona war schon sechs Mal Veranstaltungsort der Microsoft TechEd Europe. Im Oktober diesen Jahres wird die IT Konferenz dort zum siebten Mal stattfinden. Ich habe dazu ja auch schon den ein oder anderen Blogeintrag geschrieben.

Montagabend und Dienstagfrüh lädt Microsoft zu einer Roundtable Diskussion ein, an der etwa 10 Communityteilnehmer und einige Microsoft Mitarbeiter teilnehmen werden. Über den Inhalt und das Ergebnis werde ich zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt berichten.

Einer der Diskussionspunkte wird sicherlich sein, was an der TechEd verbessert werden kann, welche Wünsche wir haben. Von daher, falls ihr kurzfristig Wünsche und Anregungen habt: schickt mir einfach eine Mail und ich werde das Feedback weiterleiten.

Diesen Sonntag startet die Microsoft TechEd 2014 Nordamerika in Houston, Texas. Seit 2004 war ich regelmäßig auf der TechEd in den USA, dieses Jahr schaffe ich es aber nicht. Erfreulicherweise wird die Keynote mit Brad Anderson (Corporate Vice President, Windows Server and System Center Program Management) als Live-Stream übertragen. Somit haben alle, die nicht nach Houston fahren können zumindest die Möglichkeit, Neuigkeiten und Ankündigungen aus der Keynote live zu verfolgen.

Die Keynote wird am Montag, 12. Mai 2014 zwischen 16:00 und 17:30 deutscher Zeit übertragen.

• PRC02 | From Code to Release: DevOps for Developers * Mickey Goussett, Brian Randell

  We know you know how to write code. Websites, services, and even mobile apps—you build them all. You hold your daily scrum, you burn down your work, and you check off those user stories. But are you checking off that most important feature as much as you’d like? Of course we’re referring to shipping.
  In this seminar, Brian and Mickey show you how to make shipping a feature you check off every time you finish your work. We take a .NET web application and show you how to ship locally and to Windows Azure as often as you want.
  In doing this, we begin by looking at the features available to you from Microsoft in the latest version of Team Foundation Server as well as the cloud-based Team Foundation Service. We look at the monitoring tools available both on premises and in the cloud and look at how the world of shipping software has matured, including what the industry calls devops.
  We discuss what you need to do to support continuous deployment. Learn how to use the latest build features as well as look at various deployment tools like InRelease. See how better testing, using tools like Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager and Lab Management in Team Foundation Server, can make testing easier and more accurate. Learn how you can use Load Testing in conjunction with Windows Azure to know your app is ready.
  Sometimes bad things can happen to the best programmers, so you’ll want to ensure that you’re prepared for issues in production. We look at features—like Application Performance Monitoring and the new Microsoft Monitoring Agent—that you can use with and without System Center Operations Manager. We also look at Global Service Monitor for your publically accessible websites as well as the new Application Analytics.

• PRC04 | Modernizing WPF Line-of-Business Applications * Robert Green

  This seminar is focused on showing .NET client developers, particularly Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) developers, how to modernize their Line-of-Business applications. This involves: using a services architecture, moving to the cloud, SQL Azure, Azure web sites hosting cloud services, Active Directory authentication, service bus relay to provide and endpoint for accessing internal services, using third party controls to build modern looking UIs, building HTML, Windows 8 and Windows Phone apps that call the same Azure hosted services the base WPF application does, and integrating with Office 365. The goal of this seminar is to provide guidance to .NET client app developers on what to do today and to provide a foundation to move forward on our platform. This seminar is accompanied by slides, sample code and hands-on labs, which will all be available online after the seminar.

  Learn hands-on about a variety of integrated solutions from Microsoft which can help you embrace a virtuous cycle of Plan-Develop-Release-Operate and establish a high-trust relationship between your development and operations teams. The IT Pro plays an important role in enabling the promise of continuous delivery: that changes to applications by software developers can be more rapidly and efficiently deployed to end users. In this all-day seminar, Shane and Todd walk you through the things you should consider when planning your SharePoint 2013 farm. Then, they dig in and walk you through a full farm installation. They show you common pitfalls and explain how to work around them. They also make liberal use of PowerShell when building and configuring this farm. • PRC08 | Delivering On-Premises Self-Service Solutions with the Windows Azure Pack for Windows Server * Bradley Bartz, Ryan O’Hara, Marc Umeno

  Microsoft’s Windows Azure Pack builds on the foundation of Windows Server 2012 R2 and Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 to deliver out-of-the-box self-service solutions for users leveraging high-density websites, virtual machines, storage and networking. This seminar focuses on deep understanding of the WAP technology, including building WaaS, DaaS, and IaaS solutions and integration automation for efficiency.
  Topics of the day include: 1) WAP Overview: Learn what the Windows Azure Pack is and the components that are involved. This also includes clearly defining its value and the specific use cases that the solution addresses. 2) Deployment and Service Provisioning: See how each of the components are configured and integrated to deliver a complete solution. 3) Administering WAP: Once deployed, learn how to configure self-services systems, authentication options, building plans and subscriptions. 4) Extensibility and APIs: Learn how to manage services, extend across environments, and use the APIs.

  Many of us have been cocooned in an Active Directory environment, where Single-Sign-On (SSO) and Kerberos authentication has become the norm. But now we need to give our users access to applications and services that are public cloud based, on devices we do not control. And of course the mirror, where partners and users are using social media identity and need access to our applications and services, be they running on-premises or in a cloud environment. It’s time to stretch the boundaries and encompass identity from multiple sources, a true identity mashup. What’s more, users expect SSO and to be able to use their own devices to access applications regardless of whether those devices are based on Windows, iOS, or Android. Come to this seminar and discover how ADFS and the Web Application proxy in Windows Server 2012 R2 combines with Active Directory, partner identity, Windows Azure Active Directory identity services, and create solutions that will take identity into the future.
