ZoomIT

Posted by: | November 8, 2008 | No Comment |

One thing I did see getting used quite a bit in presentations at TechEd was the ZoomIT tool.  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897434.aspx

It enables you to zoom into a part of the screen.  Very useful for presentations.  The ability to draw on screen can be useful.  The controls function as toggle switches so it is easy to use.

If you do a lot of presentations you may find it useful.

TechEd Reflections

Posted by: | November 8, 2008 | No Comment |

TechEd is over for another year. The journey home is done (not a bad flight – I slept for most of this one) and I’ve had some sleep.

On the whole the conference was quieter than the last couple of years. A few of the big name exhibitors didn’t turn up this year and my impression was that attendance was down compared to 2007.  The content seemed a bit less technical in some cases – may be just perception.

The real plus side was that I had more opportunities to talk to Microsoft people and vendors than in previous years.  Being on Ask the Experts was fun.  Hope to do that again.

Was it worth attending?  Absolutely.

The high spot of the week – The PowerShell Community dinner. Brilliant mixture of Microsoft, Vendors, MVPs and community.

TechEd EMEA is in Berlin in November 2009.  I’ve started making my plans.

TechEd Monday II

Posted by: | November 3, 2008 | No Comment |

System Center and the management of the Windows environment is heavily featured this week.  Expect a full refresh of the System Center family in 2010.  SC Operations Manager R2 should release in Q2 2009 including SLA monitoring and the ability to manage non-Windows machines.

SP1 of SC Data Protection Manager 2008 arrives this month and now supports Hyper-V together with enhanced support for SQL Server, Exchange and MOSS.

Service Manager gets a beta refresh this week with the ability to define Roles based on user data imported from Active Directory and the integration with Configuration Manager and Operations Manager.  PowerShell scripts can be used to perform remediation activities. Change and Incident Management are its real strengths. It should RTM in H1 2010.

TechEd: Monday

Posted by: | November 3, 2008 | No Comment |

Apart from the highly irritating and overloud "entertainment" video playing before the key note started the conference start was OK.

No major announcements – most already came through at PDC last week but new to me were:

Application Virtualisation eventually will be expanded to cover server based applications such as Exchnage, SQL Server or SharePoint

System Center Operations Manager in R2 (beta this month) will be expanded to manage Linux, AIX, HPUX etc using open-wsman and openpegasus.  Can also define SLAs

Identity LifeCycle Manager is now in Release Candidate

Intelligent Application Gateway SP2 in available

Windows 2008 R2 has some cool features:

  • Hyper-V Live migration
  • Best practice Analyser is model based
  • PowerShell V2
  • Direct Access – get to apps and data across Internet without VPN
  • Branch cache – save bandwidth
  • BitLocker for USB drives and memory sticks

Next version of SQL Server will have a self service BI capability – "Gemini"

IE 8 Beta

Posted by: | September 11, 2008 | No Comment |

I’ve been using the IE8 beta for a week or so now and it works.  I’ve not had any problems with it and the new stuff works as advertised.

Its solid.  Not much of a post but when everything works there’s not much else to say 🙂

Download IE 8 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/default.aspx
