Fix: Internet Explorer 7 is stuck at the first run welcome page

August 14th 2006 in Uncategorized

Sometimes IE7 will be stuck at the Welcome page (http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx ) that appears the first time IE7 is run.  Attempts to revert to the normal home page may fail:

Some possible causes of this problem are:

1)  The Welcome page does not load completely for whatever reason.

2)  Scripting has been disabled (note: blocking ActiveX does not cause this problem)

In such circumstances, the DWORD "RunOnceHasShown" may not be created in the following registry key, or it may not be set to a value of 1.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceHasShown

If your system is stuck at the initial IE7 welcome page, shut down IE, check for the existence of the RunOnceHasShown DWORD and set it to a value of 1.

Also, ensure that the following key is set to 1:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceComplete

Also make sure you have disabled anything that may prevent IE from writing to the registry such as anti-malware applications:

The damn Explorer is still stuck. Any other ideas?

Dave

If its still stuck go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\

Add the DWORD:
RunOnceComplete

With a value of 1

Hope this helps

Dave

Stan

It is actually RunOnceComplete with a dword of 1

Sandi says: RunOnceComplete is not related to the circumstances described in this blog entry, although it should also be checked to ensure it is a value of 1 and has been added to this old FAQ.  Please review the new FAQ for the latest information:

Thanks – I’ve been having this problem for days. Several places mentioned the RunOnceHasShown key, but that didn’t have any impact on my copy. Once I added the RunOnceComplete key with a value of 1, the problem went away 🙂

Can I create a Dword in HKEY/USERS/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/INTERNETSETTINGS/RUN

LIKE THIS ONE THAT IS ALREADY THERE:

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgw.exe /RUNONCE

BUT NAME IT FOR

C:\PROGRA~1\MICROSOFT\INTERNETEXPLORER\IEXPLORER.EXE/RUNONCE/http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx

DWORD 0X0000000001(1)

?

Sandi says: No.  Why do you want to do so?

Worked for me! Thanks!

Details:

I didn't have either keys at all:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceHasShown

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceComplete

Created them both (Right click where they should be, new DWORD) and changed their value to "1".

God Bless your teching!

Anatole

Why does IE7 load properly for one user on the PC (XPHome SP2)while other user accounts get stuck on the runonce page, and also produce an internet explorer script error when I click on About

Frank S.

The fix recommended above does work! Thanks for the help. Interestingly, I also installed IE 7 on a computer with McAffee virus protection and had no problem. But all of my computers are now working OK. Again, thanks.

Buddy

Thank you.. that was driving me nutty.

I had to add both keys as well and set to 1:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceHasShown

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceComplete

Brendan

thanks

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceHasShown

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\RunOnceComplete

both need to be put in for it to work. It worked after reading this . What bugged me is MSN should have posted up a fix . Prehaps they are too busy to fix this themselves …

Charlie

Thanks Dave! Problem solved.

Joe

This worked thank you very much

Sasha

Had the same problem in an Enterprise situation. Added registry entries to user logon scripts and no-one has reported the “Im stuck on the IE7 first run page” to the helpdesk in days. Thanks

Emiel

My brand new vista laptop got a page cannot be found error.

A few ago I noticed at a customer that after installing ie7 the default runonce2.aspx was changed in runonce3.aspx

I manually went to this link and that helped me.

For various reasons I have been pondering usability in IE7 and beyond, and considering how I would like to see things change, if I had the chance.  Here is my list:
1)       More contrast in color between active and non active tabs.
2)      An ability to move the tabs to bottom or side of screen
3)      The Quick […]
