Windows XP update locks machines with SVCHOST redlined at 100%

Some of my virtual machines were impacted by the problem described in the article below, and the recommended fix seems to work (well, it works in that SVCHOST pegs CPU at 100% for only half an hour or so instead of indefinitely – patience is certainly needed).
